I think we can all agree, the larger the population base of eve, the better the experience for everyone overall.
I am unaware if anyone at ccp reads the forums, especially this section. but, im going to hope that someone points them here, because this is the information they are looking for to help improve the "new player experience". As long as it is here, they can always read it if someone points them here, fwds it, or copy and pastes this to them in an email.
Millions of gamers have been watching eve develop as time has gone on. I had a friend insist i try it, he went so far as to make me an acct and everything. i tried it, and i did like it. im very lucky and was able to pick the game up in two one day sessions. This is the first hurdle CCP is focused on, and rightly so. This is the main block to retaining subscriptions, as i invited a friend and he couldnt figure it out. There need to be things like displayed tooltips on screen, constant reminders for shortcuts, and instead of displaying markee dragon, there should be tooltip billboards in high sec.
The next 2 changes are the most important, because of the people who make it past the trial, and sub, 50% leave in the first month (like me, and i will explain why), and another 40% will leave the next couple after.
The first change that needs to happen is the safety of high sec. Solo players can not solo with suicide ganking being the "eve game breaker". in addition to the insensitivity of those types of attacks in the era we live in where suicide bombers are attacking the united states, england, paris, afghanistan, iraq, isreal, etc., what it also ensures is no one can collect anything "nice". In laymens terms, after being suicide killed doing every activity in the first month in eve, i now view my hanger as an expensive coffin repository. So, for the past few days, i have literally sat in my hanger, afraid to leave. I do not have the knowledge, mods, skills, or skillset to defend myself against seasoned multi million sp characters in a completely lawless game. As long as "Jita burns", new players will not stay subscribed. we can not get to jita reliably, and therefore will not go there to buy stuff and lose it immediately to some scammer. So, if ccp wants to retain new subscribers, they will have to change high security to HIGH SECURITY. currently, high sec is low sec, nulls sec is null sec, and low sec is just as bad as low sec, only people park alts there who dont need to do into high sec space and gate farm. They need to open the game up to us, and give us a safe place to learn and grow until we get ballsy enough to venture out into low and eventually null sec, which is what will be happening the majority of the time. gate camps in low sec need to be put to a stop, so we can at least traverse it gate to station to gate. there is seriously no difference between low and null sec. suicide ganking in high sec needs to stop as well. I know a lot of players feel that suicide ganking makes eve what it is, and thats fine. For over a dozen years i think, suicide gankers have reigned expensive hell upon helpless players in high sec. If eve wants to grow as a game, it will have to cease the viability of this activity in high sec literally completely
The second change is a very serious overall change to how eve online works unfortunately, and is pinnacle. The majority of subs who are leaving, are leaving because no one will play with "nicely" us. And what mean by that is, i have been in a "rooie friendly corp", only to find out its not at all. then, asked a bunch of other "rookie friendly corps", and got the same type of responses. Rookie friendly" deals with capsuleer sp, not actual rookie. a lack of knowledge for the game may be tolerated, but doing your own thing is not. You have to download fleet up. you have to download and use teamspeak. and, i have to essentially give them full account access with your api to even get in. No, im not ever giving anyone my api to see my wallet and messages, and this means i will never play eve. The amount of corp espionage and other activities may be what brings eve to life, but its also what makes it a place where new players can not flourish. With no trust between anyone, i can not form real connections with people. it is not all my side however. Everyone is treating me like a corp saboteur until i prove my self otherwise. My friend also had the same exp. As new players, this is way, way too much dedication to something i am just trying out. Again, with the API, it gives essentially full acct access to everything. they may not be able to do harm per say, but its the access to my bank statements and evemails that are way too invasive. No, you cant see how much money i have, and read my messages.
i need to make a sidenote that will converge on the practice of multiple accounts. this is a practice that will have to stop as well. fleet commanders acknowledging not only that they use 5 separate accounts, but that having at least a second account is mandatory for eve, needs to change before you even start to invite the mass of players into the game. One person, one account. let them hide a real id unless they opt to share it, Like Bnets REALID, or linking it to my facebook. you need to be able to trust players, but at the same time hide your identity and be multiple people, because thats eve.
I am beyond disappointed I am "locked out" of eve. My hangar is full of pretty, expensive ships, and i dont want to collect any more, because i dont feel like dying for the chagrin of older players who want to pad their stats with newbie blood, or exp vets looking to scam rookies. I hope that eve is one day soon eve is opened up to the awaiting masses.
Grammer Nazis, carebear haters, and players who feel like if i dont play your way, i am doing it wrong, feel free to flame on.
CANT SUICIDE GANK ME ON TEH FORUMS! =P
(and i am not leaving my hanger, so good luck with that one too!) |
